Chateau Musar White, Lebanon 2017
Vintage OverviewA year noted as the first since records began, where the mountains were not covered with winter snow and dry
conditions further compounded by low rainfall through much of the spring and into summer. Thankfully, the ancient
and indigenous Merwah and Obaideh varietals that make up the Chateau Musar White, are grown at very high altitude
(1200-1400 metres above sea level) and avoid the higher temperatures found on the Bekaa Valley floor, allowing the
harvest to start a little later with Obaideh on 2nd October followed by Merwah picked on 11th October.
Château Musar was established by Gaston Hochar in 1930 and is without doubt Lebanon's top wine estate. Few properties have consistently produced such high quality wines in the face of adversity and war, and it is a testament to the sheer will and determination of the Hochars that wine has been produced every single year, bar 1976 and 1984. The property is located in Ghazir, 15 miles north of Beirut overlooking the Mediterranean, whereas the vineyards themselves are located a long and sometimes dangerous truck journey over the mountains to the east of Beirut in the Bekaa Valley. The vineyards benefit from an altitude of around 1,000 metres and the subsequent cool nights serve to lengthen the crucial ripening process. Chateau Musar whites are truly unique, produced from some of the oldest vineyard sites in the world dating back to 5,000 BC, although it was the Phoenicians, the great maritime race of the Mediterranean, who first ‘introduced’ Lebanese wine to a wider audience. Indigenous ancient grape varieties Obaideh and Merwah, reputedly the ancestors of Chardonnay/Chasselas and Semillon are still cultivated from un-grafted vines on original rootstock.
