Primitivo di Manduria is a key red-wine DOC of Italy's southern Puglia region. Primitivo, the grape variety from which this wine is made, is very traditional in this part of Italy. It is the only viticultural area in Italy to specialize in the variety. California is also a major centre for the grape in its guise as Zinfandel. Primitivo got its name because it ripens early (the name has nothing to do with the variety or its wines being "primitive").
